Great Books Society Meeting

September 1st, 2007 · No Comments

The Anselmian Great Books Society will be meeting

September 29th at 6:30 pm at Professor Kevin Staley’s house

Those who wish to attend, please familiarize yourself with the Italian novel Christ Stopped at Eboli by Carlo Levi and the issues it raises:
Living in poverty and the role we play as healthy, well-off Americans
The overwhelming despair of the poverty stricken
The absence of Christianity in central Italy and other sociological regions like it.
The role of women in these areas, and the societal expectations of men.
The lives of political exiles.
The absence of education.
Why don’t the peasants sing?
As a a proclaimed socialist what was Levi’s aim in writing this book?
Who is to blame for such poverty?
What can be done?
Is their poverty the fault of the peasants of the state?
This book can be easily compared to Lord of the Flies. Why?

The MOVIE should be available in the library asap, for all you lazy people, but please come join the discussion anyways even if you only read the opening paragraph of the book.

Let me know what you plan to bring so 15 people don’t bring Coca-Cola.

Those of you interested in helping to fundraise so we can BUY books for you- let me know.

Our next reading will be a short story that is yet to be chosen, please let me know if you have suggestions.

Thank you,

-Sara Kallock
